چکیده

The case study of the brackish spring of "Almyros of Heraklio" in Crete (Greece) and its vast carbonate coastal aquifer is presented, showing the consequence of preferential flows of continental fresh water and saline sea water in karst galleries in a coastal area. Flow heterogeneity generates unexpected upconing in boreholes, and permits the spring of Almyros not to be directly connected with the surrounding water-table. This spring, with a seawater content inversely proportional to the discharge rate, is a typical karstic spring, which responds to rainfall events with impressive floods a few hours later. Water flows through deep karstic channel(s), where inflow of seawater occurs under specific pressure conditions within the drain, and then the mixed solution is rapidly transported away from the zone of saline intrusion up to the spring. Whereas the relation between the discharge and the spring water salinity is quite linear for high salinity values (Electric conductivity higher than 6000 μS.cm), the extrapolation for lower values remains uncertain. Moreover, an exceptional underground over-pressure is needed to make fresh groundwater reach the spring, with a loss of freshwater that is expelled toward the saline zone of the aquifer away from the drain. The functioning of the Almyros spring shows that, in this case, there is a dual micro-fractured and conduit flow, which should be integrated into a single groundwater flow model, to be used in studies of management plans.

Stochastic Optimization for an Analytical Model of Saltwater Intrusion in Coastal Aquifers

The present study implements a stochastic optimization technique to optimally manage freshwater pumping from coastal aquifers. Our simulations utilize the well-known sharp interface model for saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers together with its known analytical solution. The objective is to maximize the total volume of freshwater pumped by the wells from the aquifer while, at the same time...

A New Method to Infer Advancement of Saline Front in Coastal Groundwater Systems by 3D: The Case of Bari (Southern Italy) Fractured Aquifer

A new method to study 3D saline front advancement in coastal fractured aquifers has been presented. Field groundwater salinity was measured in boreholes of the Bari (Southern Italy) coastal aquifer with depth below water table. Then, the Ghyben-Herzberg freshwater/saltwater (50%) sharp interface and saline front position were determined by model simulations of the freshwater flow in groundwater...

Numerical Modeling of Seawater Intrusion in Coastal Aquifer Using Finite Volume Unstructured Mesh Method

Saltwater intrusion widely occurs in coastal areas. Therefore, dissolved salts are the most common contaminants in freshwater in coastal aquifers and this contamination arises from saltwater invasion, caused primarily by human activities due to heavy urbanization. For investigation of the methods of increasing storage of fresh ground water and prevention of seawater encroachment, predicting the...

A Finite Volume Unstructured Mesh Method for Modelling Saltwater Intrusion into Aquifer Systems

Saltwater intrusion occurs in coastal areas worldwide and a theoretical investigation of its sources is crucial because dissolved salts are probably the most common contaminants in freshwater. In the case of coastal aquifers, contamination arises from saltwater invasion, caused primarily by human activities due to heavy urbanisation. Hence, there is a need to predict the location and movement o...

A novel approach for characterizing the mixing zone of a saltwater wedge

[1] The mixing zone between freshwater and seawater in a coastal aquifer is an important transition region that controls regional groundwater flow dynamics and reactive transport processes. While experimental procedures have been developed to study the movement of salt wedges in aquifers, so far no one has attempted to exclusivelymap themixing zone associated with the wedge in a laboratory-scal...
